Culture & Excursions
Lienz, the capital of East Tyrol, is located at the intersection point of three valleys – the Drau, Isel and Puster valleys. With its central location at the foot of the Dolomites, the town is the perfect base for all sorts of activities regardless of whether sporty, cultural or fun!
Culture & excursions in East Tyrol
From idyllic valleys between high mountain ranges and unique mountain landscapes with exceptional excursion opportunities to the ancient walls of old palaces and forts, Roman excavation sites and fragrant herb gardens ideal for relaxing – East Tyrol offers everything for a great, all round holiday!
Kärnten, Salzburg, South Tyrol
Did you know that East Tyrol is not connected to the federal state of Tyrol and is, with this, an enclave?
Valley of Defereggen
With approx. 60 kilometres, the Defereggen valley (Defereggental) between East Tyrol and Lienz is the longest valley in the Alps and, at the same time, the least inhabited.
It is for good reason that the Hochpuster valley (Hochpustertal) is also known as the “Garden of the Dolomites” – lush meadows, blooming Alpine flowers and crystal clear mountain lakes unite to form a truly picturesque landscape.
The Hohe Tauern national park inhabited by many unique animal and plant species is located in one of Europe’s most impressive nature reserves with glistening white glaciers and the peaks of the Großglockner and Großvenediger mountains enthroned above.
